Allergies and Asthma

Many asthma sufferers have heightened health issues when exposed to certain allergens.  These people are called “allergic asthmatics.”  Allergic asthmatics, when exposed to allergens such as pollen, dust mites, mold, or animal dander have difficulty breathing and shortness of breath.

Generally, when someone has contact with an allergen, they don’t have these types of symptoms.  Instead they have common reactions such as itchy, red eyes, sneezing, and sometimes a cough related to nasal drainage.

Depending on the severity of the allergy, an asthma sufferer can even experience an asthma attack.  To prevent an attack, or other breathing problems, an asthmatic should try to reduce the risks by removing the allergens as much as possible in their places of living and work.

For example, if an asthmatic is allergic to animal dander, they shouldn’t have pets.  Or at least, choose a breed of animal that doesn’t have high levels of dander.

If there are problems with pollen, keep your windows closed during high pollen seasons.  You could also take showers before you go to bed to clean off all of the pollen your hair and clothes have collected throughout the day.

Basically, if you keep your house clean, and reduce the risks by following some of the suggestions listed above, it will be easier to keep out problem-causing allergens.

Nowadays, there are even air filters or even cleaning equipment that improves the air quality of your home.  Also, if you are prescribed an asthma medication to take, make sure you following the doctor’s directions.
