Exercise induced asthma
Did you know that exercise is the leading cause of triggered asthma attacks? Asthma is a medical condition that restricts the airways often leading to breathing difficulty.
These exercise induced asthma attacks occur more frequently in children because of their increased levels of activity. However, exercise induced asthma can afflict asthmatics of all ages.
If an asthmatic knows that they are susceptible to exercise induced
attacks, they should exercise with someone else, or when there is
someone nearby to supervise who knows about the asthmatic's condition.
Activity in general can be an issue for asthmatics, but there are
often certain exercises and activities that increase the risks of
problems. Basically, any exercise that entails deep breathing can be
hazardous to exercise-induced asthmatics. For example, exercises such
as intense running, biking, or hiking.
Running outdoors can especially be problematic for exercise-induced
asthmatics. This activity should be avoided whenever possible. One of
the best exercises for asthmatics, however, is swimming.
This type of exercise provides the least amount of air restriction
to the lungs. On the other hand, if chlorine is a chemical that
produces unwanted
results, please be careful.
One great tip for asthmatics is to exercise in increments. By
breaking down workouts into several sessions allows the asthmatic to
still enjoy an active lifestyle.
It normally takes about six minutes of hard breathing to set off an attack, so plan accordingly when exercising.
